I believe that we are dealing with a cause and effect relationship here. The researchers are basing their conclusion on the fact that direct descendants of village dwellers who survived the plague are carriers of Delta-32 mutation. However, if this mutation was caused by the disease itself, as stated in answer choice E, then the argument falls apart - in would mean that people survived the plague and then acquired the Delta-32 genetic mutation, which was presumably passed down to modern generations.
