Question:
Once the formerly nomadic people developed farming and settled in a valley rich in natural resources and protected from invaders, they were able to live a (i) _______ existence for hundreds of years, a period which was (ii) _______only in the twentieth century when contact with Westerners destroyed that way of life.
Since they settled in a valley rich in natural resources and protected from invaders, they must have lead a very peaceful, happy and settled life. Halcyon is the obvious choice. Even if you did not know the meaning of halcyon, you can eliminate inveterate (having a permanent unchangeable habit, activity or interest) and fatuous (silly).
And since contact with Westerners destroyed that way of life, we can say that the period was interrupted. Scotched(bring to an end, destroy) fits the blank perfectly. Initiated is the exact opposite, and hindered is a weak alternative to scotched, even if it is considered. And since the way of life was eventually destroyed, it rules out the possibility of an inveterate existence(first blank).
