There has been an ongoing debate over whether major policy decisions should always be left to politicians and government experts. The reason for this claim is that politicians and other government experts are more informed and thus have better judgment and perspective than do members of the general public. Sometimes politicians and the government may not be the best option to make the policy decisions due to corruption or personalities of the officials. However, it is my belief that major policy decisions should be left up to the expert government officials and experienced politicians.
To begin, politicians and government officials are specifically trained and experienced in how policies are created and changed. Major policy decisions should be carried out by these experienced individuals because it what they are trained for. These politicians see this type of work everyday, so they understand what circumstances have led to the decision to alter, dispose of, or create a major policy. For example, you would not want a dentist to perform major cardiac surgery on you because it is not what they are trained to do, and they are not comfortable in that position. You would want a trained cardio thoracic surgeon. The major policy decisions, should be made by the individuals who are experienced and comfortable in the area of the policy. Therefore, in the circumstance of making a major policy decision that will affect the entire country, government experts and politicians should be responsible.
In addition, these major policy decisions should only be carried out by the government experts and politicians because they are well-rounded in their knowledge of why the policy was put into place. Policies are put into place due to an issue in the country or state in order to solve a problem. As a politician or government expert, they are able to hear feedback from the general public and other officials about a certain issue or concern. As a result, the politician is able to create a policy in order to prevent or solve the ongoing issue. Usually, the general public is limited in their view of the policy. They are not able to see the whole picture of why the government puts into place certain policies. For example, the issue of legalizing marijuana in certain states raises many concerns between the public. Some states put into place a policy that prohibits it and some a policy that allows it. It is very obvious that not everyone can be pleased with this policy no matter what because people will always have conflicting opinions. This is one of the reasons why the general public should not be allowed to make major policy decisions. They are too opinionated and do not think of the whole picture such as the well being of the entire country. Government experts and politicians are able to step back and evaluate the entire situation and how it will affect the entire country.
Major policy decisions should always be made by the politicians and government experts because they are more informed about the topic and thus have far better judgment and perspective than the members of the general public. Some do not agree with this claim because they believe that the general public is able to contribute valuable knowledge due to their first hand experience with certain issues. However, when looking at the whole picture for the improving of the entire country, politicians and government experts have the better judgment.
