Franklin Pierce was an expansionist American president who signed the treaty authorizing the Gadsden Purchase of land from Mexico, but his similar attempt to (i) _______ Cuba was unpopular, even within his own party. He further cemented the (ii) _______ of his political opponents with his pro-slavery policies, which ultimately led his party to (iii) _______ him and reject his bid for a second term.
We are told that he was an expansionist American president, and he had signed the treaty organizing the Gadsden Purchase of land from Mexico. Since his attempt with regards to Cuba is describe as similar, it must involve obtaining more land, and hence annex is the right word for the first blank.
Now lets go to the third blank. Since his party ultimately rejected his bid for a second term, the word for the third blank is repudiate. A repudiation can be a precursor to rejection.
And only the enmity of his political opponents, can ultimately lead to repudiation and rejection.
