Claim: In any field — business, politics, education, government — those in power should step down after five years.
Reason: The surest path to success for any enterprise is revitalization through new leadership.
To some people being in power means everything. Having a lot of power means, for the most part, being responsible for a surplus of people and for that reason I believe that someone who has a title of power should step down after five years.
Although having a title of power might reflect them well, after five years, what could a person with so much authority still bring to the table? For change to happen and for new waves of ideas to come into play, there needs to be new people to be able to do that. As a quote that has been around for ages: “out with the old, in with the new” this is relevant to the point I am trying to make. With that we conclude that new things are happening everyday; the world is constantly changing and so many things are being created. We need to be able to keep things modern and even have our leaders up to date with the latest things. Change is good and bringing in new people who are caught up in this could only be beneficial to us a population.
Alongside, some people are in office or have a high level of power and end up making an absolute mess. For example, I do not think that having a president run for 2 terms is good for our country. 8 years might not be a lot to someone people, but for others it could only feel like an eternity. Having done that it’d be best that after 5 years they could realize and step down themselves.
Something else that I want to add is that- power and success can get to people. The pressure of needing to please so many people can get to someones head. For example, being on the school board, there can be about ten thousands students in one district depending on the location. Having to provide the absolute best to those children and family as well could possibly take a toll on a board member, leaving them to either slack off or make decisions based on emotions rather than merit.
All in all, having authority to make decisions and deciding things for people as a community, should not be taken for granted and should not last more than 5 years. Being able to change out power would only benefit the population rather than keeping the same people in.
