Hello! This is my attempt at the argument task, any feedback would be appreciated! I completed this in 28 minutes. Thank you in advance!
TOPIC
The vice president of human resources at Climpson Industries sent the following recommendation to the company's president.
"A recent national survey found that the majority of workers with access to the Internet at work had used company computers for personal or recreational activities, such as banking or playing games. In an effort to improve our employees' productivity, we should implement electronic monitoring of employees' Internet use from their workstations. Using electronic monitoring software is the best way to reduce the number of hours Climpson employees spend on personal or recreational activities. We predict that installing software to monitor employees' Internet use will allow us to prevent employees from wasting time, thereby increasing productivity and improving overall profits."
Write a response in which you discuss what questions would need to be answered in order to decide whether the prediction and the argument on which it is based are reasonable. Be sure to explain how the answers to these questions would help to evaluate the prediction.
RESPONSE
The vice president of human resources (VPHR) at Climpson Industries has suggested that monitoring employees’ internet use will increase productivity and overall profit by decreasing the amount of time employees are wasting time with recreational and personal computer use. Although not explicitly stated, the VPHR’s statement assumes that by monitoring internet use, there will be an increase in internet use for work purposes, and a decrease in internet use for personal/recreational reasons. Although there may be some merit to this claim, there some questions that need to be answered first before moving forward with this suggestion.
Firstly, they need to answer the question of whether the Climpson Industries employees are actually spending time engaging in personal or recreational activities while at work. The VPHR has made their suggestion to monitor internet use by citing a national survey, but has not given any information on the employees’ internet behaviour at Climpson Industries.
As well, the question needs to be answered on whether monitoring the employee’s internet use will decrease the likelihood of them engaging in personal/recreational internet use. Knowing that they are being watched may not be a strong enough deterrent to affect their internet use behvaiour.
If monitoring the employees’ internet activity does affect internet use behaviour so that there is an increase in work related use and decrease in personal/recreational use, will it stop employees from finding other ways to waste time? Employees may spend less time at their desks/workstations to chat with each other if internet use is being monitored.
It would be important to see how this would affect employee morale, as beign monitored may come across as a patronizing, and would therefore decrease their internal motivation to participate in productive work activities.
It would be valuable to know what the current workload of the employees at right now as well, and whether it is even possible to increase productivity and overall profits. It may be that the employees are at their maximum efficiency, and the way to increace profit and overall profit would be through expanding the company rather than monitoring current employee internet use.
In conclusion, the VPHR claim is not without merit, but there are questions that have not yet been addressed that would make their claim reasonable to execute at this time.
