Technology causes more problems for modern societies than it
Technology is essentially a powerful tool to accomplish tasks which may be too tedious or laborious quite simply and effectively. The application of technology has been sound with developments in the industry, medicine and education. However, the usage of this technology in the real world has become a problem. The massive reliance on technology for daily tasks along with its effects on health make technology a parasite that is eating away our life and society. As such, I support the view that technology has more negative effects when compared to the positive outcomes it provides.
Technology has supplanted itself firmly in our present lifestyle. From the aerospace industry to the local vendor, technology plays an important role; whether significantly or minutely that’s another question. It is quite vivid to realize this unsuspecting change technology has brought. This technological paradigm shift has affected the lives of many, mostly in an aberrant fashion. The shift from the real world to the digital realm is certainly a problem that technology has imposed. The alienation towards the society is becoming lucid in various segments of society and social class, affecting baby-boomers as well as the top 1%. A change in lifestyle is observed when a person travels on the BTS Skytrain in Thailand. Comparing to 20 years ago, the use of cellphone per passenger was massively lower, suggesting the fact that people spent their time differently, either by socializing or exploring the outskirts of the city, unlike the present, where most of us are occupied in scrolling through “memes” on Facebook. This transition into the digital realm may affect the generation in a negative way, as the broad levels of actual socialization are reduced. Making real friends, communicating with strangers and finding a life-partner were ways of developing a society in the past. Although this may happen in the digital world, the chances of substantial success are infinitesimal.
The result of the paradigm shift, besides the long-term abrupt changes in society, is the damage to the well-being of an individual. The mental, as well as the emotional health of a person, are targeted with excessive exposure to technology. Psychologists today suggest that mental health problems related to technology have had a dramatic rise. Although, some may argue that this is mainly because of the newfound introduction of technology the facts still state that major use of technology has an adverse effect on mental health. Major addiction to videogames and social media may lead to dramatic effects such as suicides or criminality, again deviating from a stable society. Besides psychological effects, technology may also affect physically. There are machines that emit gamma radiations in industrial sites while there are our cellphones that emit harmful radiations. The constant usage of such devices does, unfortunately, put a severe toll on the body.
Certainly, technology is beneficial when utilized in the right way. The technology used to educate in universities, as well as medical tech developed to save lives, are significant to the development of our civilization. However, these benefits are minor when compared to the vast influence negative technology has on the world. The Samsung Galaxy smartphones have all the resources a person needs to accomplish his daily tasks by simply relaxing on his couch, but these smartphones may also cause you to be irresponsible and languid. Sure, Samsung has developed promising features that restrict the daily usage of phones, but we are still far away from distancing ourselves from this rapid addiction.
In conclusion, technology is being thought of to escape the present world, instead of accepting reality. The effects of that as such is the alienation of the real world as well as introducing negative psychological and physical effects on health. To a certain extent, technology is certainly helpful, but for it to have more impact on society, the usage of technology must be kept in check. As such, I support the view that technology is more negative than positive in the current climate
