Could someone explain why option (E) and not option (A) ?
My thought process was that since there is a mention of fear and aggression occurring as "distinct" states - the keyword "although" would indicate blank (i) would be somewhat opposite to "distinct", "simultaneous" seemed apt.
"transitional" is logical however, how is it in contrast with the fear and aggression being in "distinct" states

Your line of reasoning is very clever. However, has a flaw.
Considering that we go through this process constantly (fear and aggression - between) they are distinct things.
So, we could not have a passage between one and another at the same time - simultaneously. maybe the shift is NOT parallel. A implies proper this: a parallel process. But we do not know. The only thing we could say is that the process back and forth is a transitional stage between these two distinct yet different states which apparently seem equal.
