It is obvious with having the word "despite" in the sentence that the first and the second blank would be opposite in meaning. Some scholars have begun to emphasize pop culture as a key...., If they look at pop culture as a key, then intuitively, this should be something positive. A key to debunk or deciphering myths, fears. If these scholars see pop culture as a useful tool, then the other folks might either reject or doubt this stand. So, skepticism works best.
