ISSUE:- Educational institutions have a responsibility to dissuade students from pursuing fields of study in which they are unlikely to succeed.
The saying goes, "If you don't belong there, then don't go for it". To ensure this for their students, Educational Institutes should have the right to prevent students from pursuing courses which don't seem right for them. Students tend to make wrong decisions in terms of their career goals and they should be reminded that it is okay not being able to achieve their childhood dreams. They should be reminded that there is always a better alternative they can opt for, and for this purpose, it is highly essential for schools and colleges to hire seasoned councellors who know how to talk to students, convince them, make them feel good about themselves, pave the right way for them and guide them to success.
Councellors have been trained to understand, analyse and guide young and ripening minds who get obfuscated about their career decisions, eventually end up in the wrong field of study and regret for the rest of their lives. A personal experience of mine can be shed to light here. Ever since the age of 8, entering the dental sphere had been my castle in the air. Cutting out dental newspaper articles, reading about a Dentist's tools in the clinic, expressing to almost everyone I knew about how proud I am to dream about being a Dentist; all this came to a halt when I finished my twelvth grade in school. I was befuddled all of a sudden. I realized that the Dental path is cumbersome, not as easy as an average persons thinks it is. A five year Bachelor's course, two year Master's course, two year Specialization course, interniships, setting up a clininc abroad in the UK, all seemed impossible now. As a little girl, patience was never my friend and visioning this long journey which seems to be a couple of years, I had to drop the entire dream. However, on the bright side, I was fortunate to have my Dad be my councellor and taking his knowledge and expertise into consideration, today, I have never been so happy to be studying Data Science in the Computer Science field. Giving up on Dentistry was excruciatingly painful, but as the Chinese proverb goes, no pain means no gain.
Today, with so many career options laid out, it is normal for students to get confused and hence, it is necessary for students to consult an expert before they may take the wrong step into a domain that may not welcome them. This is how Educational Institutes can play an integral role in helping students out in of the most important times of their lives.
