Introduction
The right way of educating is achieved by focusing on student’s good qualities while evading their bad ones. This statement is made in an attempt to define the correct balance between applying positive reinforcement on good behaviours versus negative reinforcement on bad behaviours when it comes to teaching. By leaning towards the end of the spectrum where only positive reinforcement is utilized, the statement is assumed on the general cases. However, I strongly disagree with the statement as I believe that the two reinforcements are required in all cases. The difficulty is deciding on the right balance which I will weigh heavily towards positive reinforcement, though not wholly.
1st point
One of the primary purposes of education is to guide the student into a better person. As an educator, one should have a better idea of what is right or wrong than the student. Therefore, it is his/her duty as a teacher to lead the student closer towards his/her notion of what defines a better person. To not do anything is to indicate acceptance and student will continue with this bad behaviour without knowledge of the wrong or consequence. This may even worsen this behaviour of the student which may lead to unforgivable consequences, hence, defeating the purpose of education. Thus, in general, teachers should place emphasis on student’s good behaviours while simultaneously discouraging bad behaviours.
1st counter-point
However, condemning bad actions can put a strain between educator and student. This is especially so if these bad actions are values by student’s peers or are linked to student’s perceived self value. To place harsh opinions on these negative actions may lead to mistrust and disrespect towards the educator. For instance, teenagers generally place greater value towards their peers at this age group and inhibiting subtle rebellious behaviours (which are desirable among the teenagers age group) may lead to stronger retaliation. Rather, ignoring these behaviours may do more good as it shows that the educators are able to empathize with them which then breeds trust. Thus, a possible consequence from negative reinforcement is negativity which will dampen educator’s ability to guide their student growth (e.g. through praises), diminishing the student’s ability to grow into a better person.
2nd point
Nevertheless, to just complement the goods of the person may breed complacency and disillusion. Complacency and ignorance may inhibit growth as student see no reason to develop any further. Bringing in critical feedbacks towards the student’s bad qualities will in contrast, serve as a reality check and increase student’s awareness of ones deficiencies and how he/she still has much room to grow, metaphorically speaking. Additionally, the lack of criticism may render the effectiveness of praises obsolete as student becomes numbingly used to these praises if received in copious amount. Switching between positive and justifiable negative remarks will give student a better understanding of his/her current standing in society, enabling him/her to build himself/herself for a better standing in society in future.
2nd counter-point
On the other hand, responding unfavorably to negative behaviours may work against the educator’s intention as educators may not fully comprehend the situation of his student. For instance, negative behaviours may be a symptoms of a much more troubled cause in student’s life. Condemning these actions without considering the cause of these actions may lead to more strain between student and teacher. For example, student dealing with troubled family issues may not benefit from a harsh response from teacher to work harder in order to do better. Rather, he/she may worsen by the teacher’s influence as they will be more stressed out than before as they are more pressured to do better. This may lead to serious problems like depression and self-harm. Therefore, there may be more consequence to overdoing negative reinforcement compared to positive reinforcement and hence, dealing with negative behaviours should be minimized.
Conclusion
In conclusion, I strongly advocate the need for educators to deal with students’ good and bad behaviours. The issue lies in finding the right balance and educator should take the initiative to better understand their students in order to decide on the suitable balance. However, if undetermined, the educator should avoid condemning student with his/her bad behaviours and rather, switch to a more helpful approach that then balances out with the positive reinforcement.
