The massive influx of women cyclists—making up at least a third of the total market— was perhaps the most striking and profound social consequence of the mid-1890s cycling boom. Although the new, improved bicycle had appealed immediately to a few privileged women, its impact would have been modest had it not attracted a greater cross section of the female population. It soon became apparent that many of these pioneer women bicyclists had not taken up the sport as an idle pastime. Rather, they saw cycling as a noble cause to be promoted among all women as a means to improve the general female condition. Not only would cycling encourage healthy outdoor exercise, they reasoned, it would also hasten long-overdue dress reform. To feminists, 10 the bicycle affirmed nothing less than the dignity and equality of women.

Hello!

I have a doubt about the first question, regarding option A.

Which of the following statements about women cyclists is supported by the passage?

The newly improved bicycle of the mid-1890s appealed mostly to women in a privileged position.

Whys is it wrong if the passage states that "Although the new, improved bicycle had appealed immediately to a few privileged women"

I know that then it is written that it attracted a greater cross-section but option A is saying just that it is stated in the passage, does not matter if then it attracted more women, the fact is that at first, it appealed just to privilege women.

Please explain!

No, sorry but you are wrong Sir

the question is a MUST be true question so it must be 100% supported by the passage. It is must be a perfect fit and the question and what is stated in the passage MUST be aligned perfectly

This is a key to understand and score well on the Rc section of the test

Question

The newly improved bicycle of the mid-1890s appealed mostly to women in a privileged position.

passage

Although the new, improved bicycle had appealed immediately to a few privileged women, its impact would have been modest

mostly privileged women \(\neq \) few priviledge women

E) It describes the demographic characteristics of the consumer market for bicycles in the mid-1890s.

consumer market accounts for ALL the type of consumers

B) It elaborates on a claim made in the previous sentence regarding a social consequence of the cycling boom.


Although the new, improved bicycle had appealed immediately to a few privileged women, its impact would have been modest had it not attracted a greater cross section of the female population.

I hope now is more clear the difference

For E - isn't the demographic referring to a few privileged women and greater cross section of the female population? So why is E incorrect?

Hello guys, I have a doubt on question 4's option C which is

"They provided several reasons for a cross section of the female population to use the bicycle"

So, the option says that they provided for a sample group(Cross section) of female population but in the passage they stated it for whole female population as seen in below lines

Rather, they saw cycling as a noble cause to be promoted among all women as a means to improve the general female condition

And then they give reasons without any specific mention of demographic like specifically for cross section

So isn't this wrong? Like passage speaks as a whole whereas option says they gave reasons for a cross section of female

Isn't demographic refer to the " few privileged women " ?

Frankly, I am a bit puzzled by the questions about demographics in this discussion. They are legit, of course, but for me, they do not have much sense.

First of all, we have to maintain our focus on what the question is asking us: what is the role of the bold sentence in regard to the entire passage?

Secondly: option E states: " It describes the demographic characteristics of the consumer market for bicycles in the mid-1890s."

Translated = the bold sentence what is telling us ? It tells us X

Our X is = the bold sentence describes the elements that constitute the market at the time. In other words: who were the people who bought bicycles in the mid 80? They were women, men, children, and elderly ? WHO

At this stage, the reference to demographics noun is pointless.
