Universities should require every student to take a variety of courses outside the student's field of study.
Write a response in which you discuss the extent to which you agree or disagree with the claim. In developing and supporting your position, be sure to address the most compelling reasons and/or examples that could be used to challenge your position.
Already the syllabus and curricular activities are bringing so much pressure on students. Outside courses will cause nothing but burden and extra pressure for students. It will make them “Jack of all trade but master of none.
No matter how much you try if anyone try to teach a fish how to fly, they won’t. Variety course will also do the same thing. Actually, this thins is not new, Ancient Greek philosophers actually cultivate this theory. In ancient Greece one can be a philosopher, a physician, an artist etc. Plato, Aristotle had given their thought in whatever fields they can in science in arts in politics etc. That’s why they also made mistake. Like Aristotle believed that earth is the center of the universe. Also, every material is made from four materials which are fire, earth, water and air that is absolutely false.
So, we can understand if a person wants to be participated in every sector of study fields it will be a boomerang effect. It will create an unnecessary pressure and also halt the proper education a student wants. Another major point, we should remind in mind that now every sector of study is so vast that one can’t simply keep the knowledge of everything. For example, now if a medical student began to take course of engineering courses will it be helpful for him?
Also, every sector of study became so vast that one can’t even simply know all the knowledge of its own field. Then how can he get the knowledge of variety of course and sectors. Though a student should have knowledge outside of his field so that he can cope up with his future. But make it compulsory is not a good decision and can be damaging. This should be a decision taken by the student on their own. So that, he can learn with his own curiosity.
University should not press upon students to take outside courses. It can be an u turn for students curiosity and Albert Einstein once said ‘’Curiosity is greater than knowledge.’’
