This is an equivalent ratios question
The ratio is in the form males/females
Let M = # of males at the event
So, we get: 5/3 = M/39
Cross multiply to get: (3)(M) = (5)(39)
Divide both sides by 3 to get: M = (5)(39)/3 = 65
So, there are 65 males at the event
How many people are at the event?
Total number of people = 39 females + 65 males = 104
Answer: A

Another approach:
The ratio of males to females at an event is 5 to 3
NOTE: the number of males and females must be INTEGERS
So, there could be 5 males and 3 females (for a total of 8 people)
Or there could be 10 males and 6 females (for a total of 16 people)
Or there could be 15 males and 9 females (for a total of 24 people)
etc...
Notice that the total number of people is always a multiple of 8
Check the answer choices... only one answer choice (A) is a multiple of 8, so A must be the correct answer.
