Santa traveled to one home at x miles per hour. Realizing he was running late, he then doubled his speed to the next home 20 miles away. If Santa traveled a total of 36 miles at an average speed of 240 miles per hour, approximately how long did it take him, in minutes, to travel to the first home?
A. 5.5
B. 6.0
C. 6.5
D. 7.0
E. 7.5
|-------16--------|----------20----------|
Let the speed be \(s\) and time taken be \(t_1\) and \(t_2\) respectively.
Santa travelled 36 miles at 240 mph, so total time = \(\frac{36}{240} = 0.15\) hours
Time for 16 mile trip = \(\frac{16}{s}\)
Time for 20 mile trip = \(\frac{20}{2s}\)
Total time \(= 0.15 = \frac{16}{s} + \frac{20}{2s}\)
\(\frac{26}{s} = 0.15\)
\(s = 173.33\)
So, Time for 16 mile trip = \(\frac{16}{173.33} = 0.092\) hours \(= (0.092)(60) = 5.53\) minutes
Hence, option A
