Some students will assume that −p2=(−p)2, but they are not equal.

Instead, −p2=(−1)(p2)

So, Let's test some numbers.....

case i: p=0
We get:
Quantity A: p2=02=0
Quantity B: −p2=(−1)(p2)=(−1)(02)=(−1)(0)=0
In this case, the two quantities are equal

case i: p=1
We get:
Quantity A: p2=12=1
Quantity B: −p2=(−1)(p2)=(−1)(12)=(−1)(1)=−1
In this case, Quantity A is greater

Answer: D

In order for the answer to be A, we'd need some condition that says p ≠ 0.

I've changed the official answer to D.

case 1 -

let p=0
p^2=0
-p^2=0
(Two are equal)

case 2 -
let p=1
p^2=1
-p^2=-1

A is greater
