4. What is the meaning of the term ‘
discretion’ as used in the 3rd paragraph of the passage?
The authors talks uses discretion in the below lines:
Quote:
"Furthermore, foundations can grant themselves more discretion, and retain more of their bargaining power with benefciaries, by disbursing only part of the total projected cost at regular intervals"
Discretion : the power or right to decide or act according to one's own judgment; freedom of judgment or choiceLets say I did not know what discretion meant, then how can I find what is the meaning of the word. We can try to estimate the meaning by using the context and understand the argument critically by using the steps/ tricks we use in TC and SC to complete the blank. Here the author talks about retaining the bargaining power and there is a word and thus, we can try to find something on the similar lines power.
(A) Secrecy-- Nope, nothing in the whole passage indicated about secrecy- OUT
(B) Responsibility- Nope- Not related to power- OUT
(C) Authority- Hold(D) Credibility-- Nope- OUT
(E) Gullibility--Easily deceived- OUT
All the other options are clearly out of scope or irrelevant to the required choice.
