Some people believe that corporations have a responsibility to promote the well-being of the societies and environments in which they operate. Others believe that the only responsibility of corporations, provided they operate within the law, is to make as much
money as possible.
Write a response in which you discuss which view more closely aligns with your own position and explain your reasoning for the position you take. In developing and supporting your position, you should address both of the views presented.
Corporations like any other thing around us are a part of the planet Earth and hence the well being of the socities and environment is a collective responsibility of everyone including corporations. Corporations can only thrive when the society in which it operates is healthy, ethical and responsible and can only exist when the environment has been protected and nurtured. Only making profits cannot be the sole aim of a corporate firm as it is not a long term sustainable attitude. Such firms are bound to collapse because of burn out of its employees and stakeholders and in such case, the profits earned then will be used to heal such burnouts.
It is a known fact that a thriving society is more productive for any firm than a mechanical society which is totally oriented towards profit making ignoring other aspects of life. One of such aspects is the work life balance of the stakeholders of a corporate. It is the responsibility of the firm to ensure that employees get enough time to spend quality time with their families and friends so that the overall mental and physical health of the employees develop. Such work-life balance produces a class of new generation who is more creative and will prove to be more productive at work. For example, through corporate social responsibility entrusted on corporate firms, many under priviledged children have got the access to quality education which will reep its benefits in future. Also, many restoration works have been under taken for the environment because of which the Air Quality Index of cities like New york has improved.
Secondly, the environment in which we all operate is degraded by our actions only. If the environment is ignored, the health crisis, the sustainability of the projects andthe frequencies of natural disaster will get worse. Corporates should ensure that environment is the most integral part of this entire ecosystem and the most vital link that connects each one of us. They should act on the protection and rehabilitation works of the environment. For example, a good factory environment using high efficiency HEPA filters, will ensure very low incidences of occupational hazards for the employee and hence ensure better productivity for the firm. This will also ensure that the profit earned by the firms and employees does not get drained in health management.
And finally, it is a myth that money can by anything and hence profit making should be the sole aim. But this is a very flawed and irrational concept. The over exertion of both the employees and the environment will ultimately burn them out. For example the industrial revolution has seen unprecedented profits and production but our generation is experiencing the burnout of the environment in the form of erratic weather patterns all over the globe.
In a nutshell, it is true that without profit, no firm can survive the competition but in view of above analysis, it can be concluded that well being of societies and environment is also the integral part of corporation’s responsibilities.
