A better way to approach this question is to start with the second blank because of the clue words "abstract and technical nature".
Both, obfuscate and intimidate are good contenders. However, the "abstract and technical nature" of a topic is more likely to make less understandable or confuse the novice than to frighten. So OBFUSCATE is the best fit.
The sentence is going in the same direction. We can infer from the second blank that other areas of philosophy are not easy to understand. Something that is avant-garde is modern and experimental but it is not necessary to be abstract and technical. Something that is esoteric means difficult to understand and appreciated by only a small group. Hence ESOTERIC is the answer.
