Starting today we "ll conduct an experiment. I did not open an official discussion just for this specific reason. The sense of the sentence is a sort of reflection by the author, hanging in the balance between the past and the actual soul state.
He reflects on the waning of the toughness with a slow but secure though walking
A and D are the only answers logically that fit the bill.

i feel that the first blank should be enduring or pertinacious. as at the end of the sentence, there is a contrast between "pack a punch" and "pull a punch". the contrast should be reflecting in the first sentence. Also, it is given in second sentence that the film has "machismo" and "daring" component which is contrasted with the word "hollow". so the first blank should have a word which says "pertinacious importance of true grit". we dont say "waning of true grit". this is contrasted by a more mellow word like "sauntering" for the second blank. and the other indicator is the start of the sentence- "moving between" which says that the author is talking about two different/opposite things.
