Re: Running at their respective constant rates, Machine X takes 2 days [#permalink]

With this kinda question it is always best to assign nice work values that makes sense with 2days & 3days. So let the work be to make 12 widgets.

If it takes Machine X 2 more days than Machine Y to make 12 widgets, it means, Machine Y takes 4 days at a rate of 3/day to make 12 widgets and Machine X takes 6 days at 2/day to make 12 widgets.

So working together to make 5/4(12) means they made 15 widgets at a rate of 5/day in 3days. Thus working alone and at a rate of 2/day, Machine X would take 12 days to make 2(12) widgets. Hope this helps.

Let number of days it will take machine Y to produce w widgets be a

Rate of machine Y

w/a

Rate of machine X

w/a+2

It will take two of them 3 days to produce 5w/4 widgets

w/a+2 + w/a = 5w/12

12aw + 12w(a + 2) = 5aw(a+2)

14aw + 24w = 5wa^2

5a^2 -14a-24 =0

5a(a-4) + 6(a-4) =0

a=4

If machine X alone can produce w widgets in 6 days, it will produce 2w widgets in 12 days.
