The solution to this follows the simple rule that says that the total number of factors that an integer has is obtained by
1. Carrying out prime factorisation of the number
2. Adding 1 to each of the exponent on the prime factors
3. Multiplying the resulting figures.
49 is the answer to the above question in that it has 3 factors. That is,
1. Its prime factorisation gives 7 raised to power 2
2. We add 1 to that to obtain 3
3. (Step three is skipped because there is only one prime number, just as is the case when we carry out the prime factorisation of perfect squares of prime numbers).
