I am a veteran when it comes to standardized testing, I have been teaching quantitative and verbal strategies for most of the major standardized tests including the GRE for over 10 years. Anyway, I am applying for an online course that requires the GRE so I decided to retake the exam. Since many of you are asking about the at-home GRE exam, I thought I would describe my experience using Proctor U. Here are a few points to note:
1. You are allowed to use a whiteboard and marker during the exam. It takes quite a bit of practice to get used to erasing a small white surface repeatedly. Use a damp cloth and keep spare markers.
2. You must be alone in the room at all times with limited noise. I kept my door locked throughout. I had a few power outages in my area during my exam (common in developing countries) but that did not impact my internet connection because my router has its own power supply. If you are living in an area that experiences power outages (some developing countries), make sure your laptop and internet connection are not impacted.
3. My test froze during the exam and it took the invigilators and help desk individuals 20 minutes to log me back in. I did not leave the room during this time nor converse with anyone else. So you should be prepared to sit alone in a room for 4 hour in case some delays occur.
4. My invigilators were quite understanding and helpful and responded within 5 minutes when I messaged them about the technical issue. However, they are serving several customers at a time so it took 20 minutes to resolve the issue.
5. I was able to report my scores after the exam and there were no problems or delays in this process.
If you have any further questions, feel free to contact me on my site. Good luck!
Thanks for sharing your experience! AWESOME scores!
When you had to be logged back in, did you lose test time?
