Schools should cut funding for extracurricular activities such as sports and arts when school buildings are in the need of repair. What we learn is school becomes a major factor in shaping our future. The better the infrastructure of the school, the more the enthusiasm of the students to learn. If we were to compare the zeal with which students study or participate in activities in two different schools, one with excellent infrastructure and state of the art facilities for teaching as well as for extracurricular activities and other with poor or even average infrastructure, we could easily differentiate which student studies in what school. The students that are provided with better school buildings and infrastructure tend to be more lively when compared to a school with not so good buildings.
Students spend most of their day in school, many of the students have school from morning 8:00 to afternoon 3:00 , some students may even have a longer school schedule. Some students spend more time in school than their home. The environment at school might set the tone for the rest of the day, so it is important for any school to have better building and should always keep on making it even better. That being said it is equally important for a school to have equally good extracurricular activities. Students in classes are only taught bookish knowledge, although it is very important it doesn’t help to shape the character of an individual.
Extracurricular activities helps students to find their passion, it is not that each and every student wants to become a doctor or an engineer. The most important role of any school should include to direct their students in right path, to help them find their passion. Even if the school is specifically target for a few type of students who have decided to be a doctor or an engineer or any other occupation that involves a lot of studying this doesn’t mean they should study through the entire schedule of their day. There is a famous saying, “All work and no play, makes Jack a dull boy” similarly all work and no proper recreation will falter the student’s motivation to do achieve his goals.
As there is enough emphasis on the work-life balance and how important it is, in the similar way no one should neglect extracurricular activities. If a school is in dire need for funds for improving their buildings they can collect it through other means. I will give a real life example of my school and how they managed to collect funds to improve the infrastructure of the school without any compromise on the quality of extracurricular activities. Our school had recently been renovated. There was a complete over haul and the construction for the new and better building was started from ground up. All most all of the school was completed renovating except for auditorium and badminton court. The school lacked fund, and instead of managing funds by cutting away the portion of funds assigned to different components of school activities, school decided to ask for donation from the students. Although it was not donation literally as whatever amount that we give to school for developing its infrastructure, school promised to return it back to each and every student in 2 years. No one was forced to give school money. This allowed school to get the money that they lacked and complete the construction work.
All in all I am highly against the claim that, schools should cut funding for extracurricular activities such as sports and arts when school buildings are in the need of repair, as their are more than one way to achieve what we want and in this case, to acquire funds for school buildings and secondly as extracurricular activities are equally important.
