Given Toni Morrison’s prominence—she won the Noble Prize for Literature in 1993—her works have received a flood of critical attention. One prominent line of critical inquiry is the role of music in her texts. Indeed, Morrison herself states, “Black Americans were sustained and healed and nurtured by the translation of their experience into art, above all music…in terms of aesthetics, the music is the mirror that gives me the necessary clarity.” Lars Eckstein’s contribution to this body of criticism is his examination of this issue within Morrison’s Pulitzer Prize winning text Beloved (1987), in which the fugitive slave Sethe kills her daughter rather than see her returned to slavery. Eckstein argues that within the context of this text and African American culture more generally, music has an “expressive potential” and enables African Americans to explore the suffering and painful experiences of the past that might otherwise remain unexpressed.
Which of the following most accurately illustrates Eckstein’s argument regarding the expressive capacity of music?
(A) An African American man uses country blues music to express his traumatic past as a slave.
(B) An African American man uses gospel music to foster a sense of community with African-American culture.
(C) An African American woman uses music to sustain and heal herself through painful experiences.
(D) An African American songwriter uses many biographical themes in her lyrics.
(E) An African American writer can mimic the style of many musical genres in written form.

TPR Question Explanation Eliminate choice (B) as Eckstein argues that music is a way for African Americans to explore and articulate past experiences, but makes no mention of creating a sense of community. Eliminate choice (C) as it is only partially correct: Eckstein doesn't argue that music helps to sustain and heal...through painful experiences, but rather that music helps explore the suffering and painful experiences of the past. The answer makes no reference to past experiences, so it is incorrect. Eliminate choice (D) because it doesn’t specify the purpose of the biographical details. Eliminate choice (E). If anything this mixes up information in the passage. Morrison is the one who refers to music as a “mirror” for her art. Choice (A) is the best match.
Can someone explain why the given official answer is said to be the right answer, even though it appears to be out-of-scope?Hi,
I would surely go for A ...
In the para what all does the author talks of while mentioning Eckstein ...
music has an “expressive potential” and enables African Americans to explore the suffering and painful experiences of the past that might otherwise remain unexpressed...
The main point is EXPRESSIVE potential and then EXPLORE the suffering and painful experiences
And A tells us ' uses music to EXPRESS his TRAUMATIC past'
So the choice clearly talks of two points otherwise mentioned in para about music
But doesn't the fact that they specified country blues music make the option out-of-scope because the genre of music is not at all specified in the passage?
No, it is not out of scope..
Had the para spoken about music of a certain kind say classical music and the choice spoke of a different kind of music, it would be out of a scope..
but here the para talks of music and choice gives an example of a type of music. fits in perfectly..
say para talks of author believing Indians doing well in games.
the Q then asks you to find a choice that illustrates the authors argument
if a choice states that Mr Bindra won an olympic gold in shooting would be correct
