Coral reefs are one of the most fragile, biologically complex, and diverse marine ecosystems on Earth. This ecosystem is one of the fascinating paradoxes of the biosphere: how do clear, and thus nutrient-poor, waters support such prolific and productive communities? Part of the answer lies within the tissues of the corals themselves. Symbiotic cells of algae known as zooxanthellae carry out photosynthesis using the metabolic wastes of the coral thereby producing food for themselves, for their corals, hosts, and even for other members of the reef community. This symbiotic process allows organisms in the reef community to use sparse nutrient resources efficiently.
Unfortunately for coral reefs, however, a variety of human activities are causing worldwide degradation of shallow marine habitats by adding nutrients to the water. Agriculture, slash-and-burn land clearing, sewage disposal and manufacturing that creates waste by-products all increase nutrient loads in these waters. Typical symptoms of reef decline are destabilized herbivore populations and an increasing abundance of algae and filter-feeding animals. Declines in reef communities are consistent with observations that nutrient input is increasing in direct proportion to growing human populations, thereby threatening reef communities sensitive to subtle changes in nutrient input to their waters.

2. The passage suggests which of the following about coral reef communities?
(A) Coral reef communities may actually be more likely to thrive in waters that are relatively low in nutrients. (B) The nutrients on which coral reef communities thrive are only found in shallow waters. (C) Human population growth has led to changing ocean temperatures, which threatens coral reef communities. (D) The growth of coral reef communities tends to destabilize underwater herbivore populations. (E) Coral reef communities are more complex and diverse than most ecosystems located on dry land.

(A) provide an example of a characteristic sign of reef deterioration (B) explain how reef communities acquire sustenance for survival (C) identify a factor that helps herbivore populations thrive (D) indicate a cause of decreasing nutrient input in waters that reefs inhabit (E) identify members of coral reef communities that rely on coral reefs for nutrients

4. According to the passage, which of the following is a factor that is threatening the survival of coral reef communities?
(A) The waters they inhabit contain few nutrient resources. (B) A decline in nutrient input is disrupting their symbiotic relationship with zooxanthellae. (C) The degraded waters of their marine habitats have reduced their ability to carry out photosynthesis. (D) They are too biologically complex to survive in habitats with minimal nutrient input. (E) Waste by-products result in an increase in nutrient input to reef communities.

5. It can be inferred from the passage that the author describes coral reef communities as paradoxical most likely for which of the following reasons?
(A) They are thriving even though human activities have depleted the nutrients in their environment. (B) They are able to survive in spite of an overabundance of algae inhabiting their waters. (C) They are able to survive in an environment with limited food resources. (D) Their metabolic wastes contribute to the degradation of the waters that they inhabit. (E) They are declining even when the water surrounding them remains clear.

1- B. The 1st paragraph of the passage describes the survival of corals even in nutrient-poor waters. the 2nd paragraph describes the effects of human activities on the coral reef communities. options E is described as the symptom of reef decline. option D is wrong as corals get food by the symbiotic relationship of algae and this part is only the first paragraph and I dont think that this is the primary concern of the passage. option C is part of the 2nd paragraph doesnt encompass the whole meaning of the paragraph. Option B is good as the 2nd paragraph starts with the effect of human activities on coral reefs, the activities which cause damage to reefs, the symptoms of decline etc. option A says the human activities on algae but the passage is concerned about the human activities on coral reefs. So, Option B is correct.
2-A . It is given in the first paragraph that the corals survive in nutrient poor waters (which is described as a paradox). Option E is wrong as there is no comparison with dry land mentioned in the passage. option D is wrong as the destabilization of herbivores is a symptom of decline but not a causal effect of reef growth! option C is also wrong as there is no mentioning of changes in temperature due to human activities in the passage. option B is also wrong as it is not mentioned in the passage regarding the spread of nutrients. So option A is correct as it is mentioned in the first paragraph.
3-A. Growth of filter feeding animals is given as a symptom of reef deterioration. hence option A is correct.
4-E . it is mentioned in 2nd paragraph that various human activities increase the nutrient load in the waters and is responsible for reef deterioration. Hence option E is correct.
5-C. the paradox is that the corals are surviving in a low nutrient environment as mentioned in the first paragraph. hence option C is correct

Thank you for the explanation, but can you please help me to understand which sentence (question Number 5) is talking about the low nutrient environment in the first paragraph TIA

5. It can be inferred from the passage that the author describes coral reef communities as paradoxical most likely for which of the following reasons?
(A) They are thriving even though human activities have depleted the nutrients in their environment. Opposite – Humans increased nutrients
(B) They are able to survive in spite of an overabundance of algae inhabiting their waters. This isn’t the reason why there’s a paradox
(C) They are able to survive in an environment with limited food resources. Bingo
(D) Their metabolic wastes contribute to the degradation of the waters that they inhabit. They contribute to the growth of algae, which corals have a symbiotic relationship with by giving them (the algae) metabolic waste for the algae to utilize for photosynthesis
(E) They are declining even when the water surrounding them remains clear. Nope, they actually thrive/do well when the water around them remains clear
