We can solve this question using matching operations (see the video lesson below )
Given:
Quantity A: \(a+b^2\)
Quantity B: \((a+b)^2-2ab\)
Expand and simplify Quantity B:
Quantity A: \(a+b^2\)
Quantity B: \(a^2+b^2\)
Subtract \(b^2\) from both quantities:
Quantity A: \(a\)
Quantity B: \(a^2\)
At this point we can see that, if \(a = 1\), the two quantities are equal
Conversely, if \(a = 2\), the two quantities are not equal
Answer: D
