Claim: When one is making a decision, it is better to have a limited number of options.
Reason: The more options a person has, the more difficult it is to make a rational decision.
Decision making is an pivotal part of life, at everystep you have to make a decision. Moreoever, decision making under highly constraint environment is considered as an art, that's what CEOs' of multinational companies do. I, therefore mostly agree with the claim, that it is difficult to make a rational decision when multiple options are available. In the essay below, I will discuss why it is difficult and will also shed light on why more options are better.
To begin, the two key reasons why having numeurous options can be detrimental are mentioned below. First and foremost, while having such a wide range of options it is difficult to go through each and everyone. To explain, going through every options and considering its future prediction under time constraint environment is not possible. For instance, if the nation is under attack, it would be impossible for the security cheif to go though all options. If does so, by the time the decision is made the situation might had got out of hands. Secondly, missing one option will be detrimental. To be more precise, while taking decision if the best option slips out of mind, the outcome of the decision will not be the best one. For instance, a student selecting an elective subject, while going through the list if he miss his favourite subject, he will not be fully confident with the selected subject and such decision might affect his overall performance. Hence. having a limited option is always beneficial as it aids in making a rational decision.
Although limited options might be favourable, it may not be true for all situations. To explain, think of a student applying for university, if there are only limited universities, the student will be under huge stress and will think about chances of skipping the college. However, if there are multiple universites, the student will be at ease due to availability of a backup. Hence, under such circumstances it is fruitful to have multiple choices.
To conclude, choices with narrow vision help's in making efficient decision, however, having a pool of options makes a person more relaxed. I, therefore, deem that while having multiple choices one should assign some weight to each to choose a best out of all.
