The business manager claims that television station should restore the time devoted to weather and local news to its former level. The argument is based on the following assumptions:
A) Most of the complaints received from viewers were concerned with station's coverage of weather and local news.
B) Local businesses canceled advertising contract with the television station.
The argument engages in too many clear logical fallacies, and fails to present factual evidence. Hence, the argument remains unconvincing and open to debate.
First of all, the argument assumes that time devoted to local news should be restored since most of the complaints related to station's coverage of local news. While it may be certainly true that viewers expect to see more local news coverage, a memorandum does not include content of viewer's complaints. For example, viewers may be concerned with the accuracy and completeness of local news, but not with the frequency of the news being broadcasted. Therefore, if the evidence is presented about the content of the viewer's claim, the argument could have been much more convincing.
Secondly, the argument claims that time devoted to local news should be restored to its former level since local businesses canceled advertising contract with the television station. It is again a very weak and unsupported assumption since no evidence is presented to exculpate why local businesses canceled advertising contract with the television station. For instance, local businesses may have made a decision to cancel advertising contracts with the television station due to the following reasons:
A) Local businesses may have found other channels to advertise their products. With the increasing popularity of social media and the blogosphere, they made a decision to advertise their products and services through Instagram and Facebook, but not television station.
B) One of the competitors of television station may have offered a cheaper rate for local businesses to advertise their products.
The Business Manager should consider to arrange a survey with local businesses to determine why local businesses have decided to cancel contracts with the television station.
The director of the television station can strengthen its argument by providing evidence why local businesses canceled advertising contracts with the television station.
Lastly, the argument does not address the following questions:
How the devotion of more time to local news will help assuage the loss of any further advertising revenue?
What are viewers concerns about station's coverage of weather and local news?
How the devotion of more time to local news will help to attract more viewers?
Without convincing answers to these questions, one is left with the impression that the argument is a wishful thinking rather than a convincing evidence/
To conclude, the argument is flawed for the above mentioned reasons. The argument engages in stated and unstated assumptions, which do a great deal of work in author's argument as a whole. If one assumption is proven to be wrong, the entire argument will be thrown into question. In order to assess a merit of a particual situation, it is essential to have a knowledge of all contributing factors.
