Quote:
Company X has just switched to a 4-day workweek, mandating that employees work 10 hours per day from Monday to Thursdaybinstead of 8 hours per day from Monday to Friday. Although the policy is new, Company X claims that the policy would help to increase profits by shutting down offices on Friday and to boost employee morale by reducing commuting time to and from work each week.
My response :
Company X claims that the new 4-day workweek will help to increase profits and boost employee morale by reducing the commuting time to and from each week. The extract however lacks key evidence and points to bolster this contention. The lack of evidence might seriously undermine the author's argument.
First of all, is it possible that working 10 hours a day proves to be tiring? If yes, the 10 hours a day workday might seriously affect the quality of work done by the employees. If this holds true, the company profits might in fact lower down due the quality of work not being up to the mark. Can the author provide evidence that the quality of work will not go down.
Secondly, company x assumes that the offices can just be shut down on Friday. Will the customers and clients of the company agree to this decision. The decision of shutting down the offices down one additional day a week may prove to be an impediment to a lot of processes that are day specific. For example, a stockbroker company cannot shut down on Fridays or any day of the working week as a lot of processes and services used by the customers rely on the company being operative on that particular day. More evidence as of now is needed to contend to the points mentioned above.
Lastly, the company claim assumes that working 10 hours a day and cutting of one day in the workweek will increase the employee morale. This may be true for some employees but on the broader aspect this might adversely affect the work life balance of many individuals. The argument as of now doesn’t have enough evidence to answer these complications
While it may ultimately be the case that the claims of company x are sound, we cannot conclude this from the argument as it stands now. Company profits and employee morale might depend on and a lot more factors than just cutting out workdays and increasing work hours. A lot more evidence is needed to explain and warrant the claims of company X
