"All too often, companies hire outside consultants to suggest ways for the company to operate more efficiently. If companies were to spend more time listening to their own employees, such consultants would be unnecessary."
The author mentions that companies should listen to their own employees rather than hiring outside consultants to suggest ways. I somewhat disagree to the authors opinions due to a few reasons. these reasons would help to analyse the situation better and will help to provide a better solution for the companies who want to follow the authors suggestion.
The outside consultants are experts in the field who has solved the problems for many organisations. Their job of analysing the company problems and provide a fruitful solution to the problems allows them to look at the similar problems faced by the other companies and the solution they implemented. Take for instance, a company is facing complications with product sales and profits. In this case if the people responsible for looking after the company profits have a narrow scope, the solutions they provide might not be broad enough. In this situation, hiring an outside consultant will be fruitful for the company as they bring in expertise and similar problems and solutions from other organisations.
A second reason for why the option suggested may not work is a ‘Fresh Opinion’. Outside consultants can bring a fresh opinion which the employees may not think of because of their monotonous jobs and everyday routine. Monotonous routines can cause the employees to lack the capability to have a fresh opinion and solution for the problems. The outside consultants however can have a fresh and a completely new vision towards the problems which is what the organisations sometime need.
This is not to say that the companies should never listen to their employees and should always opt for hiring outside consultants. Sometimes the employees of the company may have a better understanding of the situation and the complications faced by the organisation. For example, if the employees of a company are facing an issue with the administrative tools and processes, in this case the outside consultant may not have an insightful approach as they are not quite informed about the process (which maybe confidential to share with a person from outside the organisation) and administrative problems. They might just offer a solution which is universal and worked for most of the organisations. The general solution may not always work for a particular company. And in the case above the employees and staff might have a better list of requirements and changes that the organisation can implement.
In sum, I can say that I do not agree with the authors suggestions as long as it is not taken to the extreme. A blend of both the opinions (outside and employee) can the best possible solution due to the reasons and points mentioned in the above passages.
