The author of this argument suggests that since the local police of East Lake stopped responding to burglar alarms in commercial buildings, the number of break-ins in these commercial buildings increased. He then goes on to say that in order to decrease the number of break-ins in commercial buildings in the region, the East Lake police should begin to respond to these alarms once more. The author makes many assumptions throughout this argument and also has faults in his reasoning.
To begin, the author makes an assumption that the increase in commercial break-ins in the East Lake are solely caused by the police not responding. The author does not take into account the other factors that may be increasing the number of break-ins. For example, the economic status of East Lake may be less developed than the economy of West Lake. The East Lake and West Lake areas could be completely different. The population could vary and the people could be different in each area. Even though the break-ins may be lower in West Lake, the author should not assume that this is only because of the police responses. The author can not make the conclusion that if police begin to respond to the East Lake commercial burglaries, the number of break-ins will immediately decrease once more.
Also, the author's reasoning in his conclusion does not have the sufficient evidence he needs to make a strong claim. The conclusion states that the region's commercial break-in numbers can be decreased if the police restore the practice of responding to burglar alarms in commercial buildings. However, the author does not have enough evidence to support this claim. The author should not jump to the conclusion that since the crime rates have increased in the East Lake and not the West Lake, that the citizens should immediately reinstate the police. Other factors should also be addressed and studied.
In order to improve the content of the author's argument, I suggest that he provide more evidence about the East Lake and the West Lake. In order to look at the additional factors that may affect the criminal activity, the author needs to delve deeper into each area. He should consider other factors that may increase the burglary rates, such as the economic status of each area. Also, the author should should not jump to the conclusion that the region's commercial break-in numbers are to be solved by reinstating the police back to East Lake.
