"Instead of requiring students to take courses in a variety of disciplines - that is, courses ranging from the arts to the humanities to the physical and biological sciences - colleges and universities should allow students to enroll only in those courses that will help prepare them for jobs in their chosen fields. Such concentration is necessary in today's increasingly work oriented society."
The sunshine every day brings with itself a plethora of new scientific and technological discoveries. This is the best way to describe how quick the 21st century is taking leaps forward. This in turn implies that the inhabitants of the century have to catch up with this pace. And since the youth of the country is the future, it is on them to gear up. In such a scenario, educational institutions play a vital role in nurturing the fledglings. These institutions should, by the end of their curriculum, should be able to transform these students to all-rounders.
The students in their elementary stage are still confused about their future since there are so many options to choose from. Numerous students take up different courses but end up doing some entrepreneurial venture. This happens only because their course of study was not rigid and comprised elements from different sectors. This would ensure that they have flexibility in their choice of job.
Not only this, even if the student is sure of what to do in future, he/she does not know how the economies will change in the coming time. We have witnessed the recession of 2009, which lead to so many people losing their jobs. In the wake of being ready for such unfortunate events, students require their courses in college to be covering a wide sector to be able to make a living in any circumstance that comes their way.
If we look at it with a different perspective, the employers of any organization want to gain as much profit as possible from minimum investment. In this case, the employee they seek should possess all-round capabilities to cater to different needs of the company. For instance, if we look at the job requirement of any start-up, we would find that they require a person who is capable in more than one field. Similarly, the same skill set is required by big multinational companies as well. Thus to prepare the students for such a rat race in future, they should be given the liberty to choose subjects that are varied in nature and not narrow.
Moreover, for an overall personality development, an individual should hold basic knowledge of as many fields as possible. He/she should be aware of what is going on around them be it cinema, discoveries, inventions, political events etc. This uplifts the individual’s confidence and thus overall personality.
However, some people might argue that specialization in any field is very important. This is true but partially. Specialization is very important along with basic level knowledge of other topics as well. And also, specialization can be achieved even if there are a few other courses in the curriculum during college. This would not decrease the student’s involvement in the main subjects but just increase his knowledge.
We do not know what the future holds for us. We might just realize what we envisioned ourselves in the future is not what we actually want to be. Or we might just be pushed or forced to do something that we didn’t plan on pursuing. Such unpredictability can only be tackled if we are prepared beforehand. Thus, the students should be allowed or persuaded to choose a variety of subjects which might be useful to them in their future.
