Claim: We can usually learn much more from people whose views we share than from those whose views contradict our own.
Reason: Disagreement can cause stress and inhibit learning.
Write a response in which you discuss the extent to which you agree or disagree with the claim and the reason on which that claim is based.
People with a wide spectrum of views can either create clarity or confusion depending on whom we talk with. When we are confronted with a situation like this, we should ask, who does it help to engage in debate with? One of the answers to this question is provided by the claim. I believe that people are more likely to learn from those on a subject with the same viewpoint as those who are opposed. And I also agree with the statement that disagreement can cause stress and inhibit learning.
First, when people who share the same views come together, an ambiance of consideration and agreement is generally observed. This can help them to learn more. Recently, I was talking with a friend of mine who shares the same view on a political party as I do. Even though I was having a particular view of that party, my knowledge of that party is limited. I had the opportunity to learn more, from my friend, about the history of that political party, its functions, and operations in detail as we had the environment of candidness. This learning was possible only because of that friendly environment.
In addition, the given reason is also one of the contributing factors to learning, as it is generally true that disagreement can cause stress and inhibit learning. People who share contrasting views, generally, create a hostile environment. This can be seen in discussions between the political right-wing and left-wing ideologies. These people if they come together and discuss they almost always create a situation that generally closes their minds to other ends of the argument leading to not learn anything about their own or the other.
Finally, people when they have interest in a certain subject tend to search more on the subject and it eventually leads to an expert in that field. Consider, for example, following people of same interest in groups like Facebook, Reddit and other social media. All people who share the same views come together and share their part of information about the subject of their interest accruing the knowledge of each person in that group. They share information on experts in that field, videos with beautiful animations. This search for expert, which ultimately provides refined knowledge, could not have been possible had people of opposing views come together.
In conclusion, though some people argue that communicating with people of opposing views is more beneficial as it opens up our mind to new ideas and point out the mistakes in our argument, they are forgetting that learning in that filed is different from changing our views. The claim is not talking about correct knowledge it is only talking about learning, gathering info on topics. So, for the above stated reasons, I propose that people generally learn more from people whose views match than from those whose views differ.
