It is often said that cities are a perfect reflection of various aspects of a society. While cities around the world come in different shapes and sizes, landmark cities such as capital cities of a country are essential materials for the understanding of a society’s characteristics ranging from culture to history.
To hold its place as a capital city of a nation entails immense magnitude, often associated with resplendent history of the nation. Cities that have an immeasurable history such as Athens not only is home to countless relics and historical monuments but also imparts a remarkable meaning of being the origins of democracy. To study a city such as Athens and its associated history would be essential in understanding the concept of democracy that upholds current society in not only Greece itself but the whole world.
Capital cities around the world are usually melting pots of culture. The capital cities of each nation usually accommodate the most number of people in the country, and the variety ranges from local residents to immigrants from foreign countries. Seoul is the most densely populated region in South Korea and is a melting pot of different cultures. The spectrum includes shops that are older than 100 years that are run by 3rd generation owners in alleys of Korean traditional markets to Michelin starred restaurants in high-end neighbourhoods run by renowned French chefs. In this way, a busy yet complicated network of cultures that can be found only in capital cities is important when discovering the complicity of a society.
Yet, it is also true that smaller cities have a critical role in the understanding of society. To study the society of a nation as a whole, it would be prudent to consider the differences that arise between bigger and smaller cities of a nation. This is especially true for a country as large as the USA. As there are so many cities of different sizes, each with their own unique sense of belonging, differences between them must be analyzed to fully grasp the notion of the American society. Cities on the east coast have a completely different history when compared to the history of the west coast and this difference is highlighted starkly in the instance of the two distinct accents. In this regard, while it is also true that smaller cities hold reasonable importance in the study of a society, it must be noted that it is the difference between major and minor cities that is of utmost importance.
