On the GRE, if we encounter a question that states that: "The differences of X & Y is 4" does it mean:
X-y=4
OR
Y-X=4
Or
We need to take both situation 1 & Situation 2 into account and solve for X &Y
I'm asking because some study guides tell us that we need to assume scenario 1, but I find it odd.

Its usually the first case, i.e. X - Y. Do you have some examples?

Why can we not write the statement as |x-y| ?
Because the question stem states the difference between x & y. It doesn't state x-y or y-x
