Let distance between them 1 minute before collision be x

Sum of their speeds = 72 + 48 = 120

Therefore 1/60 = x/120

x = 2 miles

Since the speeds are in miles per hour, you convert their time apart to hour. To convert minute to hour you divide by 60.
