The author asserts that colleges and universities should let the students spend at least one semester studying in a foreign country. This is a very interesting and issue and I agree with the author as it benefits the students in several ways. Letting the students experience the taste of a foreign country gives them a lot of exposure.
It is always exciting to experience new things like traveling abroad and experiencing a different culture. College and universities in different countries have different styles of teaching. So, students who spend a semester in a foreign country can adapt to the different techniques which are used in that corresponding university. On top of that, students will learn to adapt to a new environment that will surely help them in the future when they graduate and travel to different countries for their jobs or higher studies. While adapting to their new environment, they will also learn to be more independent. Day scholars do not experience being independent as they are living with their families. So, studying abroad will provide them with this much-needed change. Students can also make new connections which can help them in the future.
While these factors benefit the students, there are a few major factors that might not interest some students to leave their native place and study abroad for a semester. One of the main factors is the cultural change. Few people are so accustomed to their culture, they find it very arduous to adapt to a new culture. Along with the cultural differences, the language barrier is a huge factor that plays its part. The next factor can be money. The total expenditure for studying abroad for a whole semester can be very expensive unless the college funds each student, which is impractical. To conclude, it can benefit the students in many positive ways. This issue will bring the necessary change and potential in students. It will give students a lot of exposure that they need.
