Considering the portion after the colon ":" - "the Mercator projection may shows Greenland as over ten times larger than Mexico, a country in fact only slightly smaller than Greenland" indicates we are looking for a word which means to "change it wrt original", thus "distort" is the best word we are looking for.
Options: "simplification","clarification" and "superficiality" can be easily ruled out
I believe the trap here is in the word "oversight" which can indicate failure to do something some form inaccuracy/mistake - which is not exactly the same as "to distort" especially with our context.
So either you would need to rule out "oversight" on above grounds or you would need to know the meaning of "warping" - which means to change it out of shape or distort. (known synonym of distort)
