The trap in this problem is the common (but faulty) assumption that 6 and 8 are the lengths of the two perpendicular sides of a right triangle, because 6 -8-10 triangles are common on the GRE. If that were the case, the Pythagorean theorem or the 3-4-5 triangle rule could be used to determine that the length x of the hypotenuse equals 6^2+8^2=10^2
However, it is also possible that the side with length 8 is the hypotenuse of the triangle. In that case 6^2+x^2=8^2
