"We recommend that Monarch Books open a café in its store. Monarch, having been in business at the same location for more than twenty years, has a large customer base because it is known for its wide selection of books on all subjects. Clearly, opening the café would attract more customers. Space could be made for the café by discontinuing the children's book section, which will probably become less popular given that the most recent national census indicated a significant decline in the percentage of the population under age ten. Opening a café will allow Monarch to attract more customers and better compete with Regal Books, which recently opened its own café."
Write a response in which you discuss what questions would need to be answered in order to decide whether the recommendation is likely to have the predicted result. Be sure to explain how the answers to these questions would help to evaluate the recommendation.
From this discussion, we came to know that Monarch book store is an old and popular book store, It’s doing its business at the same location and there comes a recommendation which is to open a café in the book store in the space of children’s book section because there is a significant decline in the percentage of the population under age ten. Also, it will be a good competition against Regal books which recently opened a café.
In this discussion there is an information which is missing. Is there any other cafe shop in that area? Because if there is any other café and if that’s popular then, it will be a tough competition. Also, people will be less interested to spend their time in a new café rather than the popular one. Another thing is that it will be less profitable if there is any other café.
Another point, which is also very crucial is that shutting down the children’s book section and opening cafe on that place. Because how much money the book store makes from that section that is missing. Though there is a citation that says that recent national census is saying that there is a decline in the percentage of population under age ten but we should also remember in mind that the there is also a population above ten who are also a customer of children’s books, Shutting down that section will cut down completely a customer base. Also, parents who have children come to the bookstore and spend some time and buy books for their children. That section of the customer also will be gone.
Also, from this discussion, we acknowledged that Regal book a competitor of Monarch book opened a café recently. Opening a café to only to compete with another book store can be devastating. Because business policy of those two might be different. Their customer base and location also might be not similar. May be Regal book customers will like the idea of a café but Monarch book customer won’t.
There is a maxim that says’ look before you leap. Changing or opening a business policy is a vital decision for any business. Owner of that bookstore should analyze the whole situation before starting or changing a business.
