The following appeared in a letter to the editor of the Balmer Island Gazette.
"On Balmer Island, where mopeds serve as a popular form of transportation, the population increases to 100,000 during the summer months. To reduce the number of accidents involving mopeds and pedestrians, the town council of Balmer Island should limit the number of mopeds rented by the island's moped rental companies from 50 per day to 25 per day during the summer season. By limiting the number of rentals, the town council will attain the 50 percent annual reduction in moped accidents that was achieved last year on the neighboring island of Seaville, when Seaville's town council enforced similar limits on moped rentals."
Write a response in which you discuss what questions would need to be answered in order to decide whether the recommendation is likely to have the predicted result. Be sure to explain how the answers to these questions would help to evaluate the recommendation.
From the letter it was coming to know that someone had written to the Balmer Island Gazette in which the person claimed that as the population of Balmer Island increases in summer so does the mopeds. It’s also caused an increase of accident on the island. To reduce the number of accidents the person suggests to reduce half of mopeds as Seaville Island did and they were quite successful to reduce accidents.
From the argument we came to know that the population of the island increases during the summer time to 100,000. Is this population resident of the island or they are tourists to visit the Island. That question should be answered. Because lot of questions are related to it. Like are most of the accidents related with these excessive populations which are not from the island. Do they break the rules of the island’s traffic? Do they also have the permission to run the mopeds?
Another point is that won’t reduce mopeds reduce the tax the Balmer Island acquire from it. Won’t it affect the economy. So, before reducing the number of mopeds did the Island government took any steps to control the traffic. Also, most of the accidents are related to pedestrians. Didn’t the island have necessary footpath for pedestrians? That questions also need answers.
Another thing about the argument the person claimed that as seaville island got success in reducing moped accidents by reducing the number of moped vehicles by fifty percent. But it is not clear that Seaville island population and problem similar to the Balmer island. Because of the letter we came to know that the accidents occurred during the summer time because of increasing in population. Do Seaville island have similar problems like Balmer island? That questions needed answers.
