“Or” denotes either this or that. This and that are not necessary the same, they are more or less distinctive from each other. If “OR” is replaced with “AND”, Perceptive and Archaic will be the best fit. Because and denotes additive while Or not.

The key words here are ANY, ANCIENT and OR.
The author wants us to know that all different kinds of observers have seen the night sky in a certain way.
So, the missing word, when paired with ANCIENT, must cover a wide range of observers.
This range of possibilities is nicely covered if we use NON-ANCIENT to predict the missing word.
Check the answer choices....MODERN and CONTEMPORARY are great fits
