why not modest since it matches with crude

You have to try to understand the whole meaning of the first sentence to answer the first blank. Even in the real test, you cannot answer questions by looking at merely one word.

Since savants love difference, they likewise love decent variety. There is nothing preferred in reasoning over an (I) _______ , crude thought, a chance in the scene of thought not recently experienced and investigated, some new point of view on an old issue, a unique (ii) _______ to an apparently sacred principle or determinedly held conviction. It's famously a lot harder to shield another case than to wreck an old one; crisp intuition in reasoning is similarly uncommon, and all the additionally energizing for it. What's more, maybe precisely on the grounds that it manages issues at an elevated level of reflection, reasoning is an (iii) _______ church.

Blank (i) Blank (ii) Blank (iii)
startling refutation narrow
modest acceptance divine
derived mechanism broad

Kudos for the right answer and explanation

For the third blank I was relating the blank to crisp thought and the third blank could be narrow also?

But here we are talking about the variety present in reasoning whether it is a startling thought which wasn't recently thought of or a refutation of a determinedly held conviction. Similarly crisp intuition is valued in reasoning.
So as this variety is being talked about, reasoning is a broad church.

This is a good question.

Philosophy loves the shocking new idea. Something that refutes the previous one. It is not a way of thinking encapsulated in commonplace but embraces some on a much wider prospectus
or broad church.

From above.
