When you deal with a word in context you should read at least two sentence before . To grasp what is going on.

BTW, these kinds of questions are rare on the GRE, a very low probability to see them. They are more typical of the TOEFL Ibt

Now

The recent popularity of sentimental and often melancholy tributes to the declining role that nature plays in everyday life,

Nature in our lives and its role surged recently. A sort of re-discovery of its importance

best expressed perhaps in Bill McKibben’s bestsellers The End of Nature and The Age of Missing Information,

confirm the ongoing purchase that this dream of escaping the city for the sensual bliss of nature has on the popular imagination.

This popularity of nature and the dream to escape from the cities to the courtyard, in a sort of soul healing, is an ongoing matter. Maybe an increasing phenomenon in the future. This dream, therefore, hold on our imagination. In other words: the dream to escape holds onto us

Allure is wrong because means fascinating (something).

here instead the key is the grip (hold) this dream has still on us

Option B in Q2 mentions "often do so in a critical manner" whereas the text says "somewhat discredited in academic scholarship". Don't these two phrases go in the opposite direction due to the usage of often ? How do we ascertain the frequency of critical reviews from the text ?

Not sure I got what you meant. Probably a sort of oxymoron

B. Academics who write about the thesis often do so in a critical manner.

The passage mentions the thesis is "somewhat discredited in academic scholarship." To be discredited means that scholars generally regard it as flawed or untrue. This implies that academic discussions are often critical of the thesis.

I'm not understanding how "somewhat discredited" translates to "often do so in a critical manner". It's quite vague. What does "somewhat discredited" indicate about how often were academics very critical ?
