While the GRE (offered by ETS) and GMAT (offered by GMAC) are both aptitude tests for graduate school programs. The basic distinction lies in which school is offering the program you wish to apply for. GRE is needed by programs offered by graduate schools offering communication, writing, journalism degrees, schools offering programs in pure sciences, schools of social sciences, engineering schools as well. The GMAT is a preferred choice for programs offered by business schools like MEM, MiM, MSBA, MS Finance etc.
Some programs like MSBA that can be offered jointly by the engineering school and business school, may give the applicant an option of submitting GRE or GMAT scores. This is typical of universities in the United States. Business school programs in the UK, around Europe, Singapore, Australia prefer the GMAT. Whereas other schools would ask for the GRE.
Do see the requirement page of your preferred program to confirm which test is preferred. Click here to know more.
