Suppose D is the midpoint of \(\overline{AC}\) and E is the midpoint of \(\overline{BC}\) If triangle DEC has an area of 8 square inches, what is the area of triangle ABC ?

area of the small triangle = 8=bh/2 ; 16=bh ; thus, bh must equal (4,4) or (8,2)
since the sides of the small triangle are the midpoint of the larger one, area of the larger triangle= x=2b2h/2 ; 2x=2b2h ; we can plug in either possible value of the sides of the smaller triangle. 2x=2(4)*2(4); 2x=64; x=32. Area of the larger triangle is 32, thus D is the answer
