forsake means to abandon or give up, politician bloviated their speeches to not address the direct issues of the public. Took me a while to guess it, coz the meaning is not quite clear. Therefore direct is the answer.

The sentence says that bloviate refers to pompous and lengthy speech and that it is still being used in the same context to describe politicians. Which means that they haven't changed their lengthy and roundabout way of speaking. So they have forsaken 'direct' speech. So that's what we choose.
