Re: The average (arithmetic mean) of four numbers is 4a + 16. When a fifth [#permalink]
Theory

➡ Average = Sum of all the Values / Total Number of Values
➡ Sum of all the Values = Average * Total Number of Values

The average (arithmetic mean) of four numbers is 4a + 16

Sum of 4 numbers = Average * 4 = 8.5 * 6 = 51 (4a + 16) * 4 = 16a + 64

When a fifth number is added, the average becomes 5a + 20

Sum of 5 numbers = Average * 5 = (5a + 20) * 5 = 25a + 100

Fifth number = Sum of 5 numbers - Sum of 4 numbers = 25a + 100 - (16a + 64) = 25a - 16a + 100 - 64 = 9a + 36

So, Answer will be E.
Hope it helps!
