can the first blank be catalyst,?? as the death prompted widespread protests. Antidote has a positive meaning, the sentence here is negative...

The way you analyzed the sentence is what bring the student to score poorly on the verbal GRE.
The key to this test is to understand the logic of the sentence.
IF the death of X initiated, gave the start, it was the spark, from then we changed what before was going and we had a shift in the protesters or whatever came after his death, all that means his DEATH was the starting point. The turning point. The zero.
And because we have several consequences AFTER his death, the death itself acted as the catalyst, as a collector for everything came after in the story.
It - the catalyst - hampered the entire story. Amplificated all things.
If you use an antidote, it is EXACTLY the contrary: you calm down and diminish the effect, neutralizing everything. Like kryptonite for superman, it is his antidote.
